Week 2

Over the past few weeks, you have read and talked about permaculture. Sometimes it may seem complicated! In the video below the permaculture concept is described in a concise way. Think about how you would present the concept of permaculture in a short few sentences.

Andrew and Nevaeh will be presenteing on permaculture next tuesday. Here we have two videos on permaculture from a farmer in Oregon. Andrew will present on the first one about sheet mulching and cover crops and Nevaeh will present on the second video about nut trees. Everyone else watch the videos too!

Look over the following recipe. we will make the kale chips this tuesday at the’sacred cedar centre’. See if you will remember the different stages!

Plants and Ecology:

The following video introduces us to the ‘pattern’ system of plant identification. Learning about families of plants is easier than learning individual plant species. The video is a little long but watch it through to the end even if you don’t get it all. Amber will be presenting on this video and the five plant families next monday. Good luck Amber!

Ok, there are a lot of videos to watch this week. This next one would be a good one to watch with your family and discuss it afterwards. Trinity will be presenting on this video on monday. You don’t have to remember all the details but tell us your thoughts and what you think were the most interesting facts and ideas in the video.

Kale Chip Recipe

Here is an easy recipe to make your own crunchy kale chips.

After you harvest your kale leaves, remove the thick part of the stem at the base of the leave.

On larger leaves cut a sharp V on either side of the stem to remove it.

Place leaves on a cookie sheet so they are not overlapping each other.

Brush them lightly with oil and sprinkle with a little salt and any other seasonings you like.
You can sprinkle them with salt, spices, herbs,  nutritional yeast, tamari or whatever flavor you like. It’s fun to experiment. t on them. You can make them herby or spicey as you like.

Put them in a dehydrator until crispy or Bake at 250 degrees for about 20-25 minutes or until they are crispy. You may have to turn them over and bake for a few more minutes depending on how thick the leaves are and how much oil you put on them.

Enjoy!

How do Tides Work?

Here is a bonus piece of information that answers a question that came up on Thursday at Burgoyne Bay. Ebony will be presenting about how the tides work next week. Can’t wait. Thanks Ebony!

We have one more video for you to watch this week. Here we see natural ecosystems, communities and permaculture principles working together.
